Linamar deburring machine recognized by Siemens as one of 2025’s inspiring industrial projects

Siemens Zrt. has recognized a deburring machine developed by Linamar Hungary’s Design and Manufacturing Center in Békéscsaba as one of the most inspiring industrial projects of 2025. The machine, built for both internal and external clients, demonstrates the value of investing in high-quality custom machinery rather than opting for cheaper, lower-grade alternatives.

Project background and technical details

The deburring machine is designed to remove burrs from machined parts with high precision, using a combination of mechanical brushing, abrasive media, and programmable logic controller (PLC)-driven automation. According to Dániel Kardos, head of the Design and Manufacturing Center, the machine integrates Siemens S7-1500 PLCs for real-time process control, servo-driven axes for precise part positioning, and adaptive force control to handle variations in workpiece geometry. The system also features a closed-loop coolant filtration unit to maintain consistent surface finish and extend tool life.

The machine’s mechanical design, led by engineer Zoltán Schriffert, incorporates a modular frame structure that allows rapid reconfiguration for different part families. Electrical design, overseen by Tibor Gál, includes safety-rated I/O modules and a human-machine interface (HMI) with Siemens WinCC for operator monitoring and diagnostics. The machine achieves a cycle time of under 45 seconds per part, with a positioning repeatability of ±0.02 mm.

Market context and competitive landscape

Kardos noted that while the broader industrial downturn has slowed capital investment decisions since October 2025, the center’s diversified portfolio—spanning hydraulic workholding fixtures, welding jigs, robot cells, and custom assembly machines—has helped maintain order intake. However, he warned that smaller Hungarian custom machine builders are increasingly taking on unprofitable contracts to stay afloat, and some clients are pushing for cost reductions that compromise technical specifications. «The saying ‘I’m not rich enough to buy cheap’ holds true here,» Kardos said. «Low-cost Chinese machine builders are not yet direct competitors, but the real threat is local players who undercut prices without ensuring margins.»

The deburring machine was entered into the Hungarian Industrial Custom Machine Grand Prix, where Siemens selected it as a standout project for 2025. The machine’s design emphasizes ease of maintenance, with quick-change brush cassettes and a self-diagnosing PLC routine that alerts operators to wear patterns before failures occur.

Application in Russia

In the Russian market, similar deburring and finishing machines are in demand across automotive, aerospace, and railway component manufacturing. Russian industrial groups, such as those in the Ural and Volga regions, are increasingly seeking automated deburring solutions that can handle cast iron, aluminum, and steel parts with minimal manual intervention. The Linamar machine’s modular design and Siemens PLC integration make it suitable for retrofitting into existing production lines, where it can replace manual grinding operations and improve throughput by up to 40%. However, current sanctions and logistics constraints may limit direct technology transfer; local engineering firms could potentially license the design or adapt similar control architectures using available Siemens components in Russia.
